"Bring on the Fall!" Peak planting time is coming up
now, as well as added opportunities to include some focus on fall and
winter plantings. The relief from the heat is not only welcome by us
gardeners, but by the plants as well. The next few weeks will offer
an ideal time to get your landscaping back in great shape before winter
arrives.
Be sure to keep trees and shrubs well watered now
through the first hard frost, so they can enter dormancy in a
well-hydrated state. Evergreens, (both needled ones and broadleafs) are
particularly vulnerable to desiccation and winter burn if not well
watered before the cold winds set in. Don't panic if some
evergreens start to show some browning or yellowing of needles this
month and next. The oldest, innermost needles typically shed after a
few years.
You should have stopped feeding trees
and shrubs by this time. Promoting more soft growth now is not a good
idea; it is time for them to start moving toward the hardening off phase
of their cycle.
Continue to be on the lookout for dead,
damaged, or diseased wood in trees and shrubs and prune them out as
discovered. Do the same with any suckers or water sprouts, but avoid
any hard pruning now. Heavy pruning now would encourage too much new
growth at the wrong time of year.
It is also in your best
interest to get the lawn as weed free as you can now. Controlling
dandelions and other perennial weeds in the fall will give you a good
start to a weed free lawn come
spring. (Let us help you choose the right Scott's Weed-B-Gone product
to make it easier for you.) September is also a prime lawn renovation
and planting time in our area. Perfect for laying new sod and
over-seeding your Fescue!
