Well the hot, hot, hot weather of summer is here and not going away anytime soon. Along with the hot humid weather comes the potential of lots of problems with your lawn. Dry spots, weeds, bugs and fungus...you name it. Having a great lawn is not rocket science, but it does require some simple steps and commitment to see it through the next few weeks. - Don't over water. Try watering less days but for longer periods of time on each zone. This will help to promote stronger root development, and ultimately a healthier lawn.
- Set your mower blade a little higher. Most people tend to cut the lawn way too low, exposing the root system to the hot sun causing more damage to the lawn.
- Spot treat for weeds. Instead of using a weed and feed type product this time of year, try selectively killing weeds with a product such as Ortho Weed-B-Gone.
- Check for bugs. Peel back the grass near dry spots to see if something is eating away at the roots and treat properly. Armyworms are already on the march through our area this summer. Armyworms may not be easily spotted through the daytime as they come out and feed at night. A colony of armyworms can damage from 1 to 3 feet of lawn in a single nightly feeding.
- Do not water at night to prevent lawn fungus. It is best to water early in the morning to prevent wasting water to evaporation and so that the lawn can dry out through the day.
These simple steps will keep your lawn looking its best and your neighbors green with envy.
