"September Garden Chores"

Well, that's it then, right?  Summer is as good as over.  The annuals look leafy and leggy, the slug and insect damage is starting to show, and even the tireless daylillies are dwindling down to their last few buds for the season.  Time to slip into the duck shoes, haul out the big tools and get to some serious September gardening chores.

Despite what some may think, Fall is a great time for gardeners. There is no better time for transplanting, or planting for that matter.  Most trees, shrubs and perennials will soon stop producing new leaves and flowers and will begin entering a period of concentrated root growth.  They will not resent "new digs" to dig into, and may welcome the notion, especially if there is some fresh topsoil or compost involved.  The next few weeks will also offer an ideal time to dig and divide crowded daylillies, hostas and garden phlox.

Plants moved now (or planted new) will have up to two months to settle in and spread their roots before they go dormant.  Plus another roughly two months jump on next year's April transplants, because their roots will start growing again as early as February.

The flip side is, of course, that any perennial weeds left in the lawn or garden now will also have the same weeks of root growth to get bigger and stronger for next spring, so it's in your best interest to also get the lawn and garden as weed free as you can now.  Controlling dandelions and other perennial weeds in the fall will give you a good start to a weed free lawn come spring.
