"Wet & Cool to Hot & Dry"

"What happened?  Summer already"?  One of the most frustrating things for a meticulous gardener and homeowner is for their lawn to have problems with fungal diseases.  It seems that this time each year, I get dozens of questions related to brown spots in lawns and turf.  "Could it be lawn fungus or disease"? and "will it kill my lawn"?  Lawns can be particularly susceptible to disease because they are monocultures - millions of the same plant in the same place, without diversity, which can cause greater potential for problems.

Lots of spring rains coupled with cool temperatures, immediately followed by higher temperatures and less rain can cause stress on the lawn, setting up the perfect breeding ground for many common lawn disease problems.  Add in some humidity, and you have a "perfect storm" of lawn problems.

Some of the more common lawn fungus problems are rust disease, red thread, summer patch, and dollar spot.  Since we cannot control the weather, we need to make effective choices in the cultural practices we can control.  Mowing high and watering consistently and deeply, and not at night are just a couple of things to help control lawn diseases.  Granular fungicides available at your local lawn and garden center will help control the majority of lawn diseases.

It is a lot easier to prevent fungus problems than to cure them. Turfgrass becomes stressed when the water and nutrient availability are not optimum.  To keep fungi from taking hold, learn what type of grass you have in your lawn and care for it accordingly.  Regardless of your lawn problem, you need to be able to correctly identify it in order to fix it.  If your lawn is attacked by fungus, despite your best efforts, you can call the professionals at Sartin Services Lawncare & Nursery to help you with your problems.  With proper care, and treatment, you can have a luscious, green lawn, free of fungal diseases.  Whatever you do, don't panic!  Turfgrass is very forgiving and tends to bounce back quickly.
