Tardiva: A Depedable Hydrangea

"Tardiva: A Dependable Hydrangea"

Tardiva is a panicle type hydrangea that is becoming increasingly popular and readily available in American nurseries.  It is similiar in appearance to many of the floribunda type hydrangeas.  The flowers are approximately 6 to 8 inches in length and it blooms well into the fall.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva' is a large growing, deciduous shrub that can be easily trained into tree form that reaches a height of 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 foot wide.  The form is upright and the texture is coarse.  Mid July flowers are white and turn pinkish to almost purple with age.  Even after they have faded, they look like moths dancing around the tree.

This hydrangea thrives in rich loamy soil that is moist, but well drained.  It does well in full sun or partial shade.  Tardiva flowers on new wood.  It is most at home along the edge of a sunny wooded border or where the landscape is loose and informal.  The Tardiva hydrangea also provides plenty of "winter interest".  Like all paniculata hydrangeas it can be pruned almost any time except right before it blooms.
