"Chrysanthemums Help to Define Fall Color"
Chrysanthemums, often referred to as just "mums" are one of the most popular and easily recognizable flowers in the world, second only to the rose. The word chrysanthemum comes from the greek prefix 'Chrys' which means golden (the color of the original flowers), and 'anthemon" meaning flower.
Chrysanthemums are now available in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes. In addition to the traditional yellow, other popular colors are white, purple, bronze, and red. They are most popular as fall decorations and for use in floral bouquets and arrangements.
Chrysanthemums are easy to grow and are easily propogated by division of roots, cuttings or seed. They can be succesfully grown in almost any type of soil, but they require a suny location for best performance. Chrysanthemums have a relatively long flowering period. The faded blooms should be removed (or "dead headed") regularly to help prolong flowering.
