Fescue lawns do thin out over time, so overseeding helps to thicken the turf to achieve higher plant density and a thicker, lusher appearance. Each time fescue goes dormant approximately 10-30% of the plants die off and need to be replaced.
Follow the steps below for great results:
-
Measure the area to be overseeded to determine how much seed to purchase. (Suggested rate of 5-10lbs per square foot.)
-
Mow your lawn to a height of 1.5 inches and remove the clippings.
-
Choose a quality grass such as Five Star or Winning Colors fescue blend. Inexpensive seed is no bargain; it often contains weed and other crop seeds that are difficult or impossible to remove once established.
-
Seed should be incorporated into the soil for good germination. The best way to accomplish this is by renting a verticut machine. It cuts shallow grooves in your lawn to create a bed for the new seed. Mark all your sprinkler heads to avoid damage from the verticutter.
-
Go over your lawn in at least two directions with the verticutter. Then use a broadcast spreader to distribute the grass seed.
-
Apply fertilizer such as New Lawn Starter or soil activator to increase soil fertility.
-
Keep the seed moist until the grass is established. This is best done with frequent short waterings. If new seed is allowed to dry out it will die.
-
After the new seed has been up for 30 days, fertilize with a winterizer.
This process will give you lush yard in the spring you can be proud of. Using this procedure and following up with a planned watering and fertilizing program will keep your lawn in tip top shape.
Your Lawn will grow to be beautiful over time!
If you can’t wait…..consider sodding! |
