Mid September is a perfect time to overseed your fescue lawn.

Fescue lawns do thin out over time, so overseeding helps to thicken the turf to achieve higher plant density and a thicker, lusher appearance.  Each time fescue goes dormant approximately 10-30% of the plants die off and need to be replaced.

Follow the steps below for great results:

  1. Measure the area to be overseeded to determine how much seed to purchase. (Suggested rate of 5-10lbs per square foot.)
  2. Mow your lawn to a height of 1.5 inches and remove the clippings.
  3. Choose a quality grass such as Five Star or Winning Colors fescue blend. Inexpensive seed is no bargain; it often contains weed and other crop seeds that are difficult or impossible to remove once established.
  4. Seed should be incorporated into the soil for good germination. The best way to accomplish this is by renting a verticut machine. It cuts shallow grooves in your lawn to create a bed for the new seed. Mark all your sprinkler heads to avoid damage from the verticutter.
  5. Go over your lawn in at least two directions with the verticutter. Then use a broadcast spreader to distribute the grass seed.
  6. Apply fertilizer such as New Lawn Starter or soil activator to increase soil fertility.
  7. Keep the seed moist until the grass is established. This is best done with frequent short waterings. If new seed is allowed to dry out it will die.
  8. After the new seed has been up for 30 days, fertilize with a winterizer.

This process will give you lush yard in the spring you can be proud of. Using this procedure and following up with a planned watering and fertilizing program will keep your lawn in tip top shape.

Your Lawn will grow to be beautiful over time!

If you can’t wait…..consider sodding!
